Spotify is experimenting with music videos

We all know Spotify as a music streaming service, but it could also be known as a music video streaming service if a new experience comes in handy.

Like TechCrunch Reports, Spotify has confirmed that it is testing a new feature called Discover, which offers a vertical list of music videos that you can browse. Whenever a new video appears, it starts automatically and there are options to like or ignore it.

Twitter user Chris Messina recorded the Discover feature in action, which he found in a TestFlight (beta) build of the Spotify app on iOS. You can watch it below:

The Spotify navigation bar has also been updated as part of this experimentation, with a Discover the icon appearing on the fourth tab of the bar between the Home and Search icons.

Although details are scarce, it is assumed that the videos are created by the artists using Spotify’s Canvas format. So, rather than the official music videos released for certain songs, an artist might choose to create something unique for Spotify users to see while they listen.

Since this is just an experience seemingly found by accident, it’s too early to tell if music videos will become a core feature, or at least an option, in the Spotify app. Even if they do, listening to music is generally a passive form of entertainment, listened to with your smartphone safely stowed in a pocket rather than held with the screen displayed.
