A Guide to Holiday Live Music Shows in Austin

0

Every season has a soundtrack, but none is more poignant and evocative than the one that accompanies the winter break. From traditional bells and voices raised in harmony to imaginative reinterpretations of classics and typical originals, here is a selection of shows offering musical gaiety this holiday season.

SOME HIGHLIGHTS

December 7: Charlie Brown’s Christmas in the United States at Paramount. A recent discussion in the office about great Christmas albums reached an invincible peak when pianist Vince Guaraldi’s 1965 classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas” was mentioned. Perhaps this is because the instrumental approach bypasses any era-specific designation famous singers give to holiday classics; these piano-centric interpretations always seem timeless. The Austin Chamber Music Center, with pianist Michelle Schumann as Guaraldi and a supporting cast that includes bassist Utah Hamrick and drummer Scott Laningham, serves up this annual holiday favorite with two shows. Pro tip: Snoopy will be in the lobby. $ 22. 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austinheatre.org – PB

December 9: Conspires Christmas at the Long Center. The Grammy-winning Austin choral group, led by 2013 Texas State Musician winner Craig Hella Johnson, promise a program “connecting everyday songs with favorite songs of the season.” This year’s special guests are Nicole Joseph and the African Children’s Choir, who join more than two dozen singers from Conspirare and an instrumental cast including acclaimed jazz guitarist Mitch Watkins. 701 West Riverside Drive. thelongcenter.org – PB

December 9-10: Graham Reynolds ruins the vacation at the Long Center Rollins Theater. Reynolds, one of Austin’s leading independent songwriters for more than a decade, promises to “wreak musical havoc on a set of holiday favorites” in the concert hall’s intimate Rollins Theater. Reynolds converts many classic Christmas carols into minor touches, casting his introspective interpretations in a haunting light. $ 29. 7:30 p.m. 701 West Riverside Drive. thelongcenter.org – DSS

December 13-24: Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. Austin’s long-standing vacation tradition combines artisan shopping with live music from a diverse selection of (mostly) local artists. This year’s lineup includes everyone from Texan pianist Robert Ellis to blues stars Jackie Venson and the Peterson Brothers. Dreamy R&B artist Mélat, honky-tonker Dale Watson, side project Sir Woman from Wild Child member Kelsey Wilson, Latin rockers Del Castillo and Grammy-nominated bluegrass band Wood & Wire are also among the performers. . $ 10 (12 and under free). Concerts every day at 12 p.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. check the website for the schedule. 900 Barton Springs Road. armadillobazaar.com – DSS

December 14: Bruce Robison & Kelly Willis 20th Annual Holiday Shindig with Patty Griffin at the Paramount Theater. Austin’s first country music couple started the party at the end of the last millennium. To celebrate the two-decade mark, they brought in one of our city’s most prominent and beloved musical artists. Griffin’s self-titled album, released earlier this year, extended a stellar career that included a Grammy Award, and his contribution to a new Tom Waits tribute album is magnificent. Willis and Robison will perform songs from their 2006 album “Happy Holidays”, along with other seasonal favorites; if we’re lucky, they’ll be releasing those family movie clips again. $ 30 to $ 48. 8:00 p.m. 713 Congress Ave. austinheatre.org – PB

December 20-21: Robert Earl Keen counts down to Christmas with Shinyribs on ACL Live. For fans of roots / country / American music in Texas, it’s hard to imagine a better holiday bill than this (especially since Willie Nelson is skipping his usual New Year’s shows this year). After hosting the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame Gala at the same venue last month, Keen and his group of aces will trot their audience favorite song, “Merry Christmas From the Family,” and more seasonal dishes. , to follow what is bound to be a High Energy Christmas Welfare Swamp Soul Opening Set from Shinyribs. $ 29 to $ 49. 8 p.m. 310, boul. Willie Nelson. acl-live.com – PB

December 21: A Motown Christmas with Tje Austin at Geraldine’s. The silky R&B singer, who once delighted domestic audiences with an appearance on “The Voice,” is hosting a sprawling vacation extravaganza with a live band and several special guests. He begins to obsess over Christmas carols to cover months before the family party and carefully curates a list that mixes soulful versions of the classics with poppy favorites and more. No coverage (if capacity permits). 9:60 PM Davis Street geraldinesaustin.com – DSS

December 21: A Very Scary Christmas: Austin’s Most Unholy Holiday Party at Texas Mist. Oh, hey there, Ebenezer, this shindig abandons the mirth you hate for a melee of monstrous sensations designed to trigger a tremor of fear in your cold, dark heart. Worm Suicide and the Devil Club are running a roster of seven punk and metal bands that will perform as live zombie actors roam the club’s haunted backyard. The event will also feature holiday horror movies, paranormal crews, a foyer and more. $ 8 to $ 10 (21 and over). 7:11 p.m. Old Bastrop Highway. scaretx.com – DSS

December 22: A Merry Christmas at ACL Live. Fifth-generation mariachi musician, Jóse Hernàndez, formed his acclaimed ensemble, Mariachi Sol de México, in 1981. Over the years, the group has performed prominent performances in concert halls around the world, signed collaborations with the Beach Boys and Willie Nelson; and serenading four US presidents. Over the past few years, they have forged a new holiday tradition, infusing their favorite Christmas tunes with the passion and drama characteristic of mariachi music. $ 29 to $ 49. 8 p.m. 310, boul. Willie Nelson. acl-live.com – DSS
